Mexico to stop jailing illegal immigrants it catches

MEXICO CITY - Mexico will no longer jail illegal immigrants detained within its borders... a move that could make it easier for many of them to make their way into the U.S.

A measure that takes effect Tuesday eliminates jail times for illegal immigrants caught in Mexico. Most are crossing the country from Central America en route to the U.S.

Undocumented immigration will now be considered a minor offense, punishable by fines equal to US$100 to US$500. Illegal immigrants previously faced up to 10 years in prison, though most were simply deported.

Mexican legislators who backed the revision say Mexico's previous penalties complicated efforts to lobby for better treatment of Mexican immigrants in the U.S.

Activists want more to be done to protect migrants in Mexico, where many are robbed and abused on their way north.

Another kind gesture from our friends from the south. These people have no shame.

The government of Mexico treats illegal immigration as a summary process. There is no appeal and illegal immigrants if found are arrested and expelled. What this ruling says is that the illegal immigrants will not be held in jail for months before being expelled as long as they are willing to pay the Mexicans a fine an amount that can be as much as a laborers years wages for a Central American.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Let's see, they used to rob them, jail them, then deport them. Now they're just going to rob them (ie fine them), then facilitate their departure to the U.S.

Why not call it what it is....A TOLL BOOTH

Why, what a lovely jesture. Mexico is going to allow illegal immigrants from around the world, even from the "axil of evil" countries, easier access accross our border. Is the Mexican government THAT STUPID? Do they honestly believe it will have an effect on our immigration policies?
