Immigrant workers awarded $4.6 million

NEW YORK – A federal judge yesterday ordered a payday for three dozen immigrants who toiled for years as delivery workers at New York City restaurants without proper wages.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Dolinger ordered the owner of several popular Vietnamese cafes to pay more than $4.6 million in back wages and overtime dating to 1999, plus fines and penalties, to a group of former employees who said they had received substandard wages.

The payment also compensates each worker thousands of dollars for supplying their own bicycles and scooters for the job.

No.....but they had to take it to the limit didn't they? What happened to all those sayings my parents used to say all the time? Tried and true words of wisdom that seem to be lost for sure.

Nothing is free or easy and if it is, it's not worth having. Everybody's gotta pay the piper at one time or another. You get what you pay for. What goes around comes around. Bird in the hand is worth more than 2 in a bush. Want in one hand a crap in the other and see which one fills up faster. Give em enough rope and they hang themselves. Lord there are 1000's of them. The truth always comes out in the end. Just been awhile since we got to see the pay-off for the evils done.

Gee I wonder if they will have to pay TAXES on all those wages, and report to the federal government in this???

I have a real problem with the wording in this article, are they legal immigrants or illegal. I for one don't like to assume.

This article does not say they are illegal aliens. If they are legal immigrants then we support them and hope the full justice of the law serves them well on behalf of all legal immigrants.

Where are you getting that these are illegals?

Am i missing something or are some of you making assumptions you should not make?

If I had to pay $4.6 million I would move back to Vietnam.

Great points, as I was wondering about the illegal status myself. Over the years there have been so many that have been able to come here legally, speak no English and rely on their ethnic group to teach them the ropes. Unfortunately, there are plenty of folks in ethnic groups that know the ropes who do their best to take advantage of the new arrivals.
