Mexico's prisoners, migrants lack rights
April 27, 2005
Mexico City, Mexico, Apr. 26 (UPI) -- Mexico's worst human rights abuses occur within its prison system and among its migrants, the National Human Rights Commission said Tuesday.
The president of the commission, Jose Luis Soberanes said the way authorities handled the cases of hundreds of murdered women in Ciudad Juarez during the past decade also represents a principal human rights issue.
"They are problems that we have to confront as a country, with wide responses from the government and with the participation of society," Soberanes said.
He lamented the violation of rights of journalists and other communicators in the country. During the past year, more than six journalists have been murdered near the United Status border.
The commission acts as a clearinghouse for human rights abuse issues, but has no legal powers to prosecute offenders."This country has lost control of its borders. And no country can sustain that kind of position." .... Ronald Reagan
