ACLU sues over immigrant driver's license issue

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit aimed at allowing some immigrants living in Michigan to get state-issued driver's licenses.

Legal immigrants who are not permanent residents have not been able to get driver's licenses since late last month.

The Legislature is trying to fix state law so legal immigrants can resume getting licenses. But the House and Senate have not yet agreed on a plan.

The ACLU's immediate goal is to help legal immigrants get driver's licenses. But the organization says that all immigrants who live and work in Michigan and intend to stay here should be able to get licenses.

The suit was filed Wednesday in Ingham County.

So the choice should really be up to all the immigrant drivers authorized to live here or not and not with the United States citizens, elected legislators or the DHS ICE Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Theres the ACLU interfering in state business again.

Driving is usually a privilege................. not a right. And its up to the state.

Can we call the ACLU when we are hit by one? They don't carry insurance, they are here illegal and when hit by one they don't speak English. Lets call them.
