Illegal Aliens Arrested in Benzie County
Posted: 8/20/2008

Several illegal immigrants are facing deportation and a married couple face criminal charges after an incident in Benzie County in Honor last July.

The Benzie County Sheriff's Department responded to a disturbance at an apartment where the friends of an illegal alien were trying to negotiate her freedom because she was being held as an indentured servant.

Investigators say Marcela Zavala and Eleodoro Aguilar-Solano, both illegal aliens, paid $3200 for the 21-year-old woman to smuggle to the U.S. She was staying there to work off her debts to the couple.

The couple's landlord told 9 & 10 News that the couple lived there for more than five years and almost always paid their rent on time. A neighbor said they had several children, including three young kids.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, is handling the investigation.

Marcela Zavala and Eleodoro Aguilar-Solano will both face federal human smuggling charges.

9 & 10's Ted Haller and Photojournalist Kevin Lee have the story.
