The mask wasn't green, it came with a green card. The mask was actually a "Space Alien".

Thank you for your correction. Even though it was not green it had no hair or eye color so it didn't single out any particular white group.

I wonder if this is someone's retaliation about the Gringo mask or if the people involved are just fed up with illegals.

Miami construction sign hacked to read 'No Latinos,' 'No Tacos'

    12:33 p.m. EDT, May 25, 2010

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE COUNTY Florida Department of Transportation officials are trying to determine how someone altered a digital construction sign along the Palmetto Expressway to flash "No Latinos" and "No Tacos" on Tuesday morning, WPLG-Ch. 10 reports.

Department spokesman Brian Rick said officials want to know if someone tampered with the sign on site, or if it was accessed remotely by computer.

It's not known how long the messages were on the sign on the northbound side of the 826, right near the Northwest 25th Street exit.

WTVJ-Ch. 6 reports that by 6 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol had turned the sign around.

Officials say the sign is password-protected, according to WTVJ.

Get a load of this story from the Palm Beach Post on the "gringo mask," with one of the most interesting graphs being this one, below, with its subtle racism toward Arizonans:

"So, you don't look the way you should in Brewer's and the police's eyes? No problem! Because here's the solution, free of charge and readily available to anyone: the Gringo Mask!

Whether you are a man or a woman, now you can boast of a perfectly acceptable image for Arizona -- you know, light skin, blond hair, blue eyes -- without having to resort to expensive bleaching creams like Sammy Sosa or Michael Jackson did, or cumbersome Joan Rivers-type plastic surgery."

One of the readers' comments, in reaction to this story, was right on:

"Where's the outrage over this "gringo mask," like there was over the illegal alien Halloween costume. Oh that's right, tolerance only goes one way. Once again another example how whites can be discriminated against and nothing happens!!"

According to the ad agency's web site:

"We understand from your responses that some people might equate the word "Gringo" with an ethnic slur. We do not. It is simply a slang term used to describe Caucasians, and we don't assign any negative connotations to it."

In Austin a number of months ago, on the other hand, two radio DJs were suspended from their morning talk show for using the word "wetback" during some wide-ranging and lighthearted banter about illegal immigratoin and the politically correct language associated with the problem ("undocumented workers," etc.)

    Thomas Lifson adds:

The idea that "gringo" is not an ethnic slur doesn't pass the giggle test. Who do they think is going to buy that?

I agree with that. This afternoon I spoke to an African American man who is originally form the Bahamas. He told me that gringo to him is in the same catagory as a person of his race being called the n word and should not be tolerated.

Thanks to your involvement, the GringoMask has achieved its primary objective to raise awareness of the potential for racial profiling by enforcement of Arizona SB 1070. GringoMask was not a commercial product or intended to be a long term project, but a piece of satire to promote discussion and thought.

In addition to raising awareness, the mask was used to promote dialogue between people of different opinions in the hopes of arriving at better solutions than SB 1070, and to show solidarity with Americans of every race and color across the country that found this law unfair in its targeting of a specific ethnic group even if only implicitly. We chose this mask because of its light-hearted nature and tongue-in-cheek approach much in the same vein as Jeff Foxworthy's shtick "You Might be a Redneck" or Carlos Mencia's "beaner" jokes. However, we in no way meant to offend anyone.

We understand from your responses that some people might equate the word "Gringo" with an ethnic slur. We do not. It is simply a slang term used to describe Caucasians, and we don't assign any negative connotations to it. In fact, the mask communicates that looking this way will keep you above suspicion of being an illegal immigrant in Arizona, a positive thing not a derogatory one. We hope everyone will view the mask the way we do...a comical tool to convey a message and raise awareness about an issue that is important to all Americans. If the campaign has been taken in a different light by some, we sincerely regret the misunderstanding.

Thanks for voicing your opinions and helping to get the dialogue going.
We look forward to a better solution to the illegal immigration problem.

There are also "slang terms" for Hispanics, Asians, and African-Americans. But the majority of people would never use those words because it is rude, insensitive, insulting, and mean. Why should caucasians be feel any different when someone call them a "gringo"?

Gringo is a racial slur the same as wetback is a racial slur. If gringo is merely a slang word, then wetback would also fall into that category. Now if someone manufactures a wetback mask, hispanics would be writhing on the floor from the catostrophic insult. Look what happened over the illegal alien costume. And illegal alien is a legal term, not a slang term.
