Mich. proposes court rules for undocumented immigrants

LANSING, July 5, 2010 (AP): The Michigan Supreme Court is considering new statewide courtroom instructions for undocumented immigrants who plead guilty to crimes.

They could be advised that pleading guilty or no contest to state crimes can lead to deportation.

The Supreme Court is proposing two ways for judges to handle it and will take public comment until Oct. 1.

The court is reacting to a U.S. Supreme Court decision that says illegal immigrants must be told of the consequences of a guilty plea on their immigration status.

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman predicts it will cause problems for the justice system.

You bet. It will encourage them to plead not guilty and go to trial keeping jails over crowded, putting more of a burden on the court systems, more money spend on trials and pre-trail incaration.

    This is really insane.

I don't get it. If they know they're illegal then why are they not being deported anyway! This is how insane this issue has become in this country. If an illegal invader ends up in court, he should know that he's going to be deported irrrespective of how he pleads in the case before him!

The instruction should be: However you should decide to plead in this matter, you will be deported upon the conclusion of this proceeding, or any sentence imposed upon you in the event you're found guilty.

    Do you understand?

We're the only country on the face of this planet who treats illegal invaders this way! It's insanity!

    This article is mis-leading.

I think our Supreme Court made this ruling to warn LEGAL Immigrants about the conseqeunces and possibility losing their USA citizenship if they plead guilty. I don't think this has anything to do with IA's.
