RALEIGH, N.C. -- A year after the nationwide protests that launched a movement, Tea Party groups in North Carolina want to change anger into action.

A crowd estimated at around 1,000 gathered on Thursday at the state Capitol to hear speakers urge them to get politically organized and vote.

Ron Woodard of NC Listen, which opposes illegal immigration, told the crowd that if they don't take action, their agenda will go nowhere.

The crowd was also addressed by numerous Republicans running for state and federal office, but organizer Laura Long says the movement is nonpartisan.

The movement sprang up last year in response to frustration with what members see as out-of-control federal spending and government infringement on personal freedom.
