LONG BEACH – A coach who tried to defend a player during a Midnight Basketball Program in Long Beach is recovering after he was beaten by as many as 15 gang members.
The 37-year-old coach says he suffered broken bones in his face and hands, had bruised ribs and needed stitches after Thursday night's attack at a park gym.
No arrests were made.
The coach told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that he saw several gang members attack one of the boys who was playing at the gym under the city-sponsored recreation program. The coach says he shouted at the gang members, who turned on him, and more came running in as he defended himself.
Police are investigating.
