POINT LOMA — Authorities were investigating a suspected smuggling boat that came ashore with five to 10 people on board at Point Loma Friday morning.
The Coast Guard received a report shortly before 8 a.m. that several people may have been in the ocean and in distress south of Point Loma Nazarene University. Their boat was said to be capsized, stranding the people on the beach below cliffs, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque said.
A Coast Guard helicopter and boat were sent for possible rescues, but crews found that no one was in the water, Petty Officer 1st Class Allyson Conroy said.
Luque said lifeguards and firefighters helped five people scale the cliffs. The Border Patrol was called in and agents were looking on the beach and around the area for three to five more people believed to have landed in the boat.
Lifeguards were working later in the morning to have the boat and its load of fuel cans removed from the beach.

POINT LOMA — A smuggling boat was found beached on Point Loma early Friday and authorities took 21 suspected illegal migrants into custody, including 16 found at Point Loma Nazarene University, authorities said.
Someone noticed a number of people near a 23-foot outboard motor boat on the beach south of the clifftop college campus and called the U.S. Coast Guard before 8 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque said.
The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and a boat for possible rescues, but found that no one from the migrants’ boat was in the water or in distress, a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.
