There are approximately 9.2 million Chinese nationals who have relocated to foreign countries, reports the state-run China News Service (CNS), citing the latest report by US thinktank Pew Research Center.

The report, which was based on figures and research provided by the United Nations and World Bank, was made public on Dec. 17. It said that India leads with a total of 14.2 million migrants across the world, followed by Mexico with 13.2 million, Russia with 10.8 million.

The United States, meanwhile, remains the priority destination for many. In 1990, the total amount of global migrants was 154 million but the figure has surged to 232 million as of this year, the report said, adding there are a total of 46 million migrants now living in the United States, followed by 11 million in Russia.

A vast majority of the 13.2 million migrants from Mexico live across the border in the United States, while figures this year showed that 14% of the US population are foreign-born. The thinktank's report also said that approximately 70% of the migrants chose to relocate for economic reasons.

The report added that as of this year, India received US$71 billion from migrants working overseas, while China received a total of US$60.2 billion.
