PHOENIX - The decision by Gov. Jan Brewer to sign a pair of controversial bills may have generated some unwanted attention for Arizona.
But it hasn't hurt the governor's popularity at home.
In fact, a new statewide poll shows that Brewer has increased her lead over presumptive Democratic nominee Terry Goddard in the last week and a half.
Rasmussen Reports concludes that if the election were held today, 48 percent of those questioned would vote to give Brewer a full term of her own, versus 40 percent for Goddard. That same question, asked April 16, found Brewer leading Goddard by a 44-40 margin.
And in March, Brewer actually was trailing Goddard 45-36 percent.
The telephonic survey of 500 likely voters conducted Tuesday also found that 23 percent strongly approve of the job Brewer is doing, with another 33 percent saying they somewhat approve. Another 15 percent somewhat disapprove, with 27 percent in strong disapproval of her performance.
Tuesday's survey came four days after Brewer signed what is considered the toughest state law aimed at illegal immigrants in the nation.
Just days earlier, Brewer penned her approval to a measure that will let virtually any adult to carry a concealed weapon. That eliminates the need to first obtain a state-issued permit which requires training and a background check.
