OR: Governor signs SB1080 into law
Just rec'd this via email from OFIR:
[quote]
OFIR Members and supporters:
Please look at the press release from the Governor at the end of this message.
Governor Kulongoski signed Senate Bill 1080 on Friday. OFIR members have for years tried to get the legislature to pass such a bill. Congratulations to everyone!! SB 1080 closely resembles the driver license portion of the Respect for Law Act.
However the Respect for Law Act contains two other important provisions;
The requirement that anyone registering to vote for the first time must prove that they are a citizen and the provision that allows local police to work directly with federal immigration authorities.
Please continue to collect signatures and mail the initiative sheets back to the OFIR PO Box.
Once again congratulations to everyone in OFIR!

Governor Kulongoski Signs Legislation to Secure Oregon Driver Licenses
SB 1080 requires proof of legal presence for driver licenses and identification cards
Salem – Today Governor Ted Kulongoski signed Senate Bill 1080, which requires residents of Oregon to provide proof of legal presence in the United States to qualify for an Oregon driver license, driver permit or identification card. This legislation expands on the Governor’s executive order 07-22, which tightened the documentation and identity verification requirements for licenses and identity cards.

Thanks Jean and everyone else that helped get it done.
I honestly had my doubts some days, but hey, just goes to show - that even in a state with a Dem Gov. and Dem Senate and a Dem House, we are starting down the road to recovery (eg. enforcement). IF the ACLU has any ideas of taking this to court,think again.Muehler v Mena in april 2005 ruling by US supreme courtremoved any barriers from questioning any individuals about immigration status.Futhermore,in 1996 congress passed and president signed it into law protecting local law enforcrment officerswho act to enforce federal immigration law.This also protected them from any punishment from sanctuary cities.Us jusice dept has recently made it clear that local law enforcement can enforce immigration law.
