Migrant teenager, run over by train, has hope for recovery of crushed foot

Two Saturdays ago, just after dark, a group of undocumented immigrants scrambled out of the brush alongside a railroad bed in Rio Rico and began to climb aboard a northbound freight train.

But when the man acting as the group’s guide tried to hoist 18-year-old Ines Flores Melo onto a train car, he lost his grip and she tumbled to the ground, the car’s steel wheels crushing her left foot and twisting it away from her leg.

“I fell down, and when I looked, I didn’t have a foot,â€

But . . but . . I thought Mexico had no medical facilities and sick or injured illegals would surely die if they were deported.
