" migrants " suffering in California schools

Migrant students struggling in California schools
By Kim Minugh | Sacramento Bee
California's migrant students are struggling to meet high school graduation requirements for math and English -- if they enroll in high school at all -- and at all ages tend to learn English at a slower rate than other English-language learners, according to a report released Monday by the California Department of Education.

The report assesses the progress and needs of the state's migrant student population -- children whose parents work in the fields or in other agriculture-related jobs, and who tend to change school districts as a result of their parents' work.

California has the largest such population in the country, with more than 240,000 migrant students enrolled in public schools. » read more

OUR kids are suffering even more, because of the migrants!

Temp workers have NO need to bring the wife and kids along if they come to work for the season!
Let the employers of the migrants hire ESL teachers for the migrants kids. Once the kids learn English, then they can enroll in schools. No point in every kid being dumbed down and out tax dollars wasted!

Exactly!!! I don't think too many kids do well in school period if their parents don't help and encourage at home. What is the point of dumping money into this if their parents don't encourage and support the education anyway. Why gear your school to just help these kids when they may be gone tomorrow? We have children of service men and women and they don't cater to those kids and they move around alot as well. All the more pressure on the parents to help their kids stay afloat and adjust. I feel for these kids but there's a limit as to how much one can do and personal responsibility comes into play.

I have friends who are truck drivers. They want the family together at all costs and travel as a family. They homeschool instead of long periods of time without dad and all that. They know that for now it works well but may have to re-asess the situation later, but they value education and these kids are doing great. We all make choices and the school can't cater to every group and every different lifestyle and expect the tax payers to fund it at the expense of their own childrens education.

Temporary workers should not be allowed to bring in spouses or minor children. We shouldn't have to pay to educate, feed, house or provide any kind of medical bennies to temporary workers' families. They need to change that visa.

Exactly. Especially since they use the children as an excuse to stay.
