Military seizes explosives, fake police uniforms

An anonymous tip leads to cache of weapons

Tijuana.- Military authorities seized more 15 pounds of explosives, several weapons, fake federal police uniforms and other equipment Tuesday in the city’s east side.

According to the Second Military Region, an anonymous call reported that a group of armed men could be found in a house under construction in the Camino Verde neighborhood, in the Sánchez Taboada district.

Military personnel went to the area and inspected various houses. No one was detained, however, they found in one of them two rifles, 177 magazines, 1,179 cartridges and nearly 15 pounds of explosive materials.

Military authorities also seized 10 gas masks, five bullet-proof vests, 24 shirts with the logo of the federal unit that investigates organized crime, 17 shirts with the logo of the federal Attorney General’s Office, one license plate for a state police vehicle and one for federal police vehicle.

The investigation was turned over to federal authorities.
