OH: Deerfield could make a stand against illegal immigration

Deerfield could make a stand against illegal immigration
    Apr 12, 2007

Deerfield Twp. may be the first Warren County government to take a progressive step toward addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Township Trustee Chris Romano has proposed legislation that would require vendors — the township deals with approximately 100 outside contractors — to sign an affidavit vowing that they do not employ illegal immigrants. Romano says he likes to lead by example.

?It is a hot topic nationally, and in this state and my way of doing things is to lead from the start,? he said. ?It is in our purview as a township to do this and I believe we ought to be encouraging people to follow the law.?

If the township discovers one of its vendors has not been honest, the punishment will be the loss of the business relationship.

The board will likely vote on the legislation at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Judy Lehman is co-founder of Citizens for Legal Communities, a group formed last year after Kevin Barnhill, 27, was stabbed to death in Mason, allegedly by illegal immigrants. Lehman said she believes Deerfield is the first community to step up to the plate.

Her group has been visiting cities, townships and Warren County, urging them to take steps to curb the illegal alien population.

?If it takes going to these places 15 times, we?ll do it,? she said. ?This is a sensitive issue and we understand that, but we?ll help them get that courage.?

They've got the right idea. You've got to nip it in the bud.

Vendors employing illegals not welcome, Deerfield Twp. says

BY ERIC BRADLEY | COMMUNITY PRESS STAFF WRITER

DEERFIELD TWP. - Vendors wanting to do business in this Warren County community must provide written proof that they do not employ illegal immigrants.

Deerfield Township trustees at their April 17 meeting approved legislation requiring contractors to submit written documentation showing compliance with and violations of the Federal Immigration and Nationality Act in the county or any bordering counties during the last four years.

The act makes it unlawful to hire or recruit an immigrant alien knowing that person is unauthorized to work in the United States.

If a vendor was later found to be in violation of the law, that could be grounds for termination of contracts, officials said.

Board Vice President Chris Romano said the township was doing what it could to combat illegal immigration.

"This is one area where our authority is somewhat limited, but we can do something to make sure the township is part of the solution rather than the problem," Romano said.

Localities such as Deerfield Township are limited in its response to illegal immigration since federal law pre-empts state and local law.

Citizens for Legal Communities, an activist group formed after last year's murder of Mason resident Kevin Barnhill, allegedly by illegal immigrants, attended the meeting and applauded the "courage" of trustees.

The organization has traveled to many local communities to urge governments to take on the question of illegal immigrants.

"We've had the support, we've had the attention and I think it's going to take someone like you to step up to the plate and actually do something," said Judy Lehman, a co-founder of the group.
