Charlotte NC: only dozens show up at amnesty rally

Groups unite to push for immigration reform
    By: Kate Gaier

CHARLOTTE -- Dozens gathered Friday afternoon at Marshall Park in support of immigration reform. Several smaller groups in the Latin community came together to form one larger, united group.

They talked about fair treatment and practical solutions for immigrants in this country. They held signs talking about this common purpose and say they will be better heard speaking as one.

"We want to stay in touch and we want to stay up to date about what everybody is doing so that we can support it, and we also want to unite our efforts to the work that's being done at the national level," said Ruben Campillo, of the Latin American Coalition.

In May, the group says it wants to see 5,000 faxes, e-mails and phone calls made to the White House.

I have been popping in and out of News14 all day to see if there were any rallies, but heard not one word uttered about anything even possible. There was absolutely no publicity, or I would have gone and taken pics and protested the protest.

I am pretty sure they will use the fax, email, phone system like the rest of us did. We'd better get busy NOW!

It doesn't sound like anything much happened in SW Fla, nothing like the pro-illegal marches (2005 or 2006 in Ft. Myers) where marchers in residential neighborhoods left water bottles all over people's lawns and some of them pounding on doors to use the toilet. A few used the shrubbery if folks did not answer the door.
Quite a few employers fired everyone scheduled to work that day who did not show up. Should be the law of the land.

Ohhhhh, so THAT'S why all I could hear today was the sound of corn popping.........well, once some kind of weird fizzling noise died down anyway

Watch though. Tomorrow they'll be explaining that we misunderstood them......they meant that more illegal aliens than ever would be staying at home, not marching.

Like you said it must have been that Mexican Flu thingy or maybe the Universe is trying to tell them something.

Anyway all is quite on the SW Florida front except we do have one confirmed case of Mexican Flu from a little Mexican school boy who was recently in Mexico.

    Anyway...I enjoyed my popcorn.

    * Grupos de Charlotte buscan unidad para la reforma migratoria

Immigrant rights groups from throughout Charlotte are joining forces to fight for immigration reform.

Dozens of advocates from the Communities for Comprehensive Reform, a coalition of two dozen organizations, waved flags and held signs at a Friday gathering in Marshall Park calling for legislation that would give illegal immigrants a chance to live and work legally.

Ruben Campillo, a member and advocacy coordinator for the Latin American Coalition said they want to hold President Obama to his promise to address immigration reform.
