A Milwaukee woman could be deported back to the African nation of Cameroon, if she’s convicted of mailing forged passports.

Culet Atemkeng, 31, was charged with four felonies, after U.S. Customs agents found a pair of passports with fake immigration stamps in a Fed Ex package she sent to her home country.

She’s scheduled to go on trial Dec. 11. If she’s sent back home, Atemkeng is afraid she might be killed.

Prosecutors said she sent forged passports, along with requests for visas, to consulates in Ireland, Germany, and Hungary with the intent to mail them to Cameroon.

Atemkeng is a refugee from that country, and was granted asylum here in 2003. She’s been studying to be a nurse, and said she was only trying to help others escape the persecution she faced in Africa.

According to her lawyer, Atemkeng had no idea the documents were forged. They also challenge the way the government obtained them.

Customs agents claim the Fed Ex plant in Wauwatosa is an international border, and routinely search foreign-bound packages. Atemkeng’s lawyer says that’s wrong, and his client’s rights against unreasonable searches were violated.
