Minuteman Civil Defense Corps VS. McCain
McCain facing 2010 primary
Social conservatives tolerated John McCain as the party's nominee, but never trusted him, and he now appears to be facing a serious primary from the right in Arizona next year.
Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the anti-immigration movement, will announcing tomorrow at an event on the Mexican border that he's resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary.
From a forthcoming release:
"John McCain has failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation's borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness," Simcox said. "He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation's border security hostage to his amnesty schemes. Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation's problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough."
McCain was forced to abandon his own immigration reform legislation during last year's Republican Primary, a move that may have cost him substantial Hispanic support to which his record could have given him access.
So he's basically getting it from both sides on this one.
Simcox, with a national base and a high profile on the right, is well positioned to give McCain a serious local headache. He'll find some allies among the conservatives who recently took over the Arizona Republican Party from McCain's allies, and he has a national fundraising base.

Does anyone have follow up info on if Simcox supports the D.A. amnesty if chain migration was eliminated? I seem to recall reading something like this a few weeks back.

Minuteman Chris Simcox to challenge McCain for Senate
WASHINGTON -- The anti-illegal-immigration Right appears to have finally found its candidate to run against Sen. John McCain.
Chris Simcox, founder of the border-watch group Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, is expected to formally announce Wednesday a Republican primary challenge to four-term incumbent and 2008 presidential nominee. McCain is up for re-election next year.
Simcox's campaign Web site is already up and running.
In a statement first reported by Politico.com, Simcox blasts McCain for having "failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation's borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness."
"He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation's border security hostage to his amnesty schemes," Simcox said. "Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation's problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough."
Telephone calls to Simcox seeking more information about his campaign have not yet been returned.
McCain, who for years advocated comprehensive immigration reform, has long been at odds with the border hard-liners of his party. The local anti-McCain GOP contingent began searching for someone to take him on make almost immediately after McCain lost last year's White House race to President Barack Obama. Many have been trying to persuade former Congressman J.D. Hayworth, now a KFYI talk radio host, to take the Senate plunge.
Whether McCain will be on board with the Obama administration's version of immigration reform is unclear. McCain recently sharply criticized an emerging immigration reform plan backed by organized labor that he said doesn't "secure the borders first" or include a guest-worker program.
"That's not the deal. I cannot support a proposal that does not include a temporary worker program that is legal and temporary," McCain said last week after an appearance at an Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry luncheon in Scottsdale.
McCain also has called for more National Guard troops on the border.
