San Diego wants Feds to pay $100 Million for Illegals

County Wants Feds To Pay Illegal Immigration Costs

    POSTED: 2:50 pm PDT September 25, 2007

SAN DIEGO -- The federal government owes San Diego County over $100 million, according to the county Board of Supervisors, for failing to address illegal immigration. The whopping price tag is the result of report presented to the board Tuesday.

The study was conducted by John Weeks, a professor at San Diego State University and director of the school's International Population Center, at the request of the Board of Supervisors. Weeks' report showed that county services such as law enforcement, health care and education are being provided to illegal immigrants and taxpayers are footing the bill.

"We can't stop the problem but we have to pay for it. So, I think our citizens have the right to be reimbursed," Supervisor Bill Horn told NBC 7/39.

According to the study, direct expenditures in the 2006-07 fiscal year totaled $101.5 million, with nearly half that amount being spent by the Sheriff's Department to house inmates in jails. The county was reimbursed $2.3 million by the federal government.

"If you're going to have a failed policy then you ought to pay for it. That's all we're really asking for. I'm not asking to deport everybody," Horn said.

Supervisor Diane Jacob said, "It's a travesty and it's this federal government just robbing the people, the taxpayer in San Diego County because of their failures to take proper action.

"That's money we could be spending on others things -- fixing our roads, our libraries, our parks, our trails," she said.

Supervisor Greg Cox said the government has a program to reimburse local governments for illegal immigration costs, but he said President George W. Bush has not provided funds for years.

The supervisors will pass the invoice on to Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray who will introduce the idea to legislators. A bill will also be sent to President Bush.

How about putting the blame where it really lays..........with the liberal garbage running California.

How about with the governor for handing everything to the ILLEGALS on a silver platter at the expense of CA taxpayers?

How about the state legislators who want to give the ILLEGALS the state?

How about the Battle"axes" of evil...........(Clinton) Boxer and Feinstein.......who spend their lives greedily demanding more and more taxpayer dollars for poor CA? AND demanding more and more ILLEGALS BE BROUGHT IN?

It's time for CALIFORNIA TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN STUPIDITY.

I don't know about you, but I'm SO tired of my tax dollars going to subsidize the lives of people who are in the U.S. illegally.

Now, If I CHOOSE to donate my money to Mexico's poor, then I'll do it. However, I resent that the choice is being made for me...against my will.
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

As a resident of San Diego County this pleasantly surprises me. First heard about it on Lou's show tonight and was shocked the SD Council addressed the issue of illegals at all. I thought it was a hush-hush topic among the council.
Yes, this state is a liberals heaven especially up north.
Wish we were split into two states, the north and south.
Plenty of Californians feel the same way I do about this issue so we'll take whatever good news we can get.
And we did try with prop 187, our last chance at some control but everyone knows the end to that story.
The letter probably won't be answered but still, I'm proud of the council for making some kind of attempt.

    enforcing immigration laws in NJ

NJ attorney general recently ordered local and state police to verify immigration status of those arrested for DUI or indictible crimes. It's a start.

    Funding Fight Against Illegals
    Thursday , September 27, 2007

This is a rush transcript from "Your World with Neil Cavuto," September 26, 2007. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

NEIL CAVUTO, HOST: Meanwhile, another FOX News Alert: A major American city cracking down on illegals now want Washington to foot the bill.

San Diego officials today demanding the federal government pick up the tab. And it's a big one, estimated at about $101 million a year for its crackdown on illegal immigration.

With us now is County Supervisor Bill Horn. The supervisor is a Republican.

And, essentially, Bill, what you're telling the president is, look, the feds are not doing anything, and we can't afford to do this on our own, right?

BILL HORN, SAN DIEGO 5TH DISTRICT COUNTY SUPERVISOR: Well, Neil, it's turned out to be a major problem for us.

In the last 10 years, the illegal population has doubled. The cost of handling services for them has tripled. And before, when it was a $10 million problem, it was something that County of San Diego could handle. Now it has reached $101 million just out of our general fund, and it is a major issue for us.

And, if the federal government is going to have a policy of having a failed immigration policy — and that is what it is — and I have been around this for 13 years — I think they should foot the bill for this. The cost alone for incarceration, out of that $101 million, is $49 million a year for the County of San Diego.

The feds give us back in SCAP funding $2 million to handle the costs of their prisoners. So...

CAVUTO: All right. So, now you — people who don't know, geographically, you are a just a hop, skip and a jump away from the border, so it's a bigger problem for you.

But now the issue is, you know, whether you are responsible or the federal government is responsible, the federal government has essentially said the $2 million you have got thus far is all you're going to get. So, how do you make up that difference? Or do you?

HORN: Well, Neil, I have got people on probation costing me $10 million a year. They committed a crime. They have been convicted. They were not deported. And I have got them on probation. I think they ought to be deported.

I'm asking the federal government to do three things. They have got a suspense file on Social Security for people's numbers that did not match and moneys that were paid in. I would like to see them take some of that money and pay us back. We are losing $101 million a year on this. And, hop, skip and a jump, we are on the border with Mexico.

    (CROSSTALK)

CAVUTO: Bill, have you gotten any reaction?

HORN: Well, I have gotten from — you know, I have been working with Brian Bilbray, because I want him to carry something forward.

CAVUTO: Who is he? Who is he?

    (CROSSTALK)

HORN: He is a congressman for the county — for San Diego.

    CAVUTO: OK.

So, and what reaction have you gotten? What have they told you?

HORN: Well, he's — he told me he would carry this.

I would like to see ICE — and a lot of law enforcement agencies agree with me.

    CAVUTO: Yes.

HORN: I would like to see ICE, if they get somebody convicted in Denver, and they deport them to Mexico, my sheriff's deputies ought to know that in their vehicle on a national network, that we have now arrested somebody that has already been deported. We don't have that coordination. And we need to have it.

CAVUTO: All right. All good points.

    (CROSSTALK)

    CAVUTO: All right.

Bill, I really do wish we had more time. This is a fascinating issue. I do want to steal you back, but we will see how this goes.

    Bill, thank you very much.

HORN: All right. Thank you, Neil.

    CAVUTO: All right.

Just had to add this common sense editorial to this thread.

    Immigration’s Costs
    Posted 2007-10-01

Even if you’re the most enlightened and sensitive of men – or women – you might be a tad upset if the government billed you for the medical/legal/welfare expenses of strangers who were camping out in your neighborhood illegally.

San Diego County taxpayers have received such a bill – for $101.5 million annually. The county asked for a study documenting how much illegal aliens were costing the taxpayers. Direct expenditures on behalf of illegal immigrants cost the county $101.5 million annually.

But that figure only includes county expenses, not those of hospitals and schools, which are funded privately or by other levels of government. Considering the high cost of medical benefits and education, the total cost of illegal immigrants to the taxpayers of San Diego County could easily exceed $200 million annually.

While this is outrageous for taxpayers, it’s an exceptionally good deal for illegal immigrants.

It is estimated that there are about 210,000 illegal immigrants living in San Diego County. So math professors among us – or anyone with a calculator – can estimate the national costs of 12 million illegal aliens.

Nearly half of the San Diego sum – $48.5 million – was spent by the Sheriff’s Department to house inmates in area jails, according to the report.

The sum, of course, doesn’t include the human costs and fiscal expenses of the crimes the illegal immigrants are in jail for.

The Board of Supervisors said they will pass the information to the county’s congressional delegation. Perhaps a special copy should be sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who just said building a border fence is a “terrible idea.â€
