The day began a lot differently for two Mission police officers on Monday.

Instead of being out patrolling the streets, they are out patrolling ten miles of the Rio Grande.

They're members of a specialized team dedicated to fight crime in all residential and commercial areas located south of Mission along the river.

"This is something that we're trying to provide a sense of security for the people who live along the river, people who conduct business, at the same time like bars and restaurants," said Mission police spokesman Lt. Martin Garza.

River patrol officers are specially trained to look out for suspicious activities such as smuggling or illegal immigration.

Over the last three and a half years, Mission police has provided a stronger police presence with their boats,

Garza said they're prepared to help in any river rescues and most importantly deter illegal activities.

"And certainly we believe that the presence of our boat patrol along with our horse patrol working together will reduce the amount of pursuits that we might encounter out on the streets," Garza said.
