NM: State office of Hispanic Affairs proposed.....
MY question is WHY? Stop the identity/ethnic politics....the "needs" of assimilated Hispanic AMERICANS are no different nor more deserving than the needs of any other citizen of New Mexico. (me thinks the "needs" they are talking about is for those illegal immigrants and their progeny who remain unassimilated, non-English speaking, poor and want special services/privileges granted through the state to make them more comfortable while illegally residing in NM).

Office of Hispanic Affairs proposed
SANTA FE (AP) - Hispanic groups want the state Legislature to establish a New Mexico Office of Hispanic Affairs.
Hispanics make up about 43 percent of New Mexico’s population, the largest percentage of any state.
Advocates say New Mexico needs a governmental agency focusing on issues of concern to the Hispanic community.
Democratic Senator Linda Lopez of Albuquerque says it would be a focal point to recognize Hispanics and the contributions they’ve made to New Mexico.
She says it also would be a place to look to for information, guidance and support.
Several states—including Ohio, Iowa and Idaho—have such offices or commissions.
New Mexico has a cabinet-level Indian Affairs Department and an Office of African American Affairs.

Whoever thought, in their wildest dreams, that the state of New Mexico, would actually one day become the "New" Mexico?
Calderon was absolutely right when he said...."Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico".

Until we can put together a mega firm of lawyers to go after these
race and ethnic based groups nothing will happen
There will have to be some mega discrimination lawsuits going
on , ON OUR BEHALF against ethnocentricism in this country
For a colorblind society there sure seems to be a lot of
groups looking for priveledge status because of race and ethnicity
Another thing , I'm German , on behalf of the Germans in this country
we declare ourselves a minority , We want special treatment and all kinds of free stuff , I'm sure the Italians are also deserving of a minority status
how about Lithuanians?
Geeez , your either 100% American or your not , if you need to use
a minority ethnic crutch , your not American

"New Mexico has a cabinet-level Indian Affairs Department and an Office of African American Affairs."
How about an office of white persons affairs ?
I'm sure that would go over real well

There are some Spanish speaking Hispanic families living in New Mexico whose ancestors have been there since before there even was a United States. Spanish is an intergral part of the culture of New Mexico. I conceed that a department established disinctly for Hispanics would be likely to become over politicized.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

We can not gather together as Americans fighting for and against issues if we continue to divide ourselves out and then make special allowances based on those divisions. The population of New Mexico should say no to special interests and programs of this type. More waste of taxpayer dollars too.
Ephesians 4:32Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
