Unconditional bail has been set at $150,000 for a Rochester man accused of breaking into a rural Elgin home and robbing and assaulting a woman who was home.

Alejandro Auguirre Aguilar, 23, 1618 Marion Road, was arraigned on the criminal charges Monday. Judge Terrance Walters set the bail and then continued the hearing until today, after Aguilar asked for an interpreter.

The criminal complaint charges Aguilar with one felony count of first-degree burglary, one felony count of first-degree aggravated robbery and one misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault.

He is accused of entering the woman's house about 4:30 p.m. Saturday and assaulting an 18-year-old woman who confronted him. The woman told officers that she and her mother had been in the basement and that she went upstairs when she heard footsteps. She thought it was a family member but saw a stranger come out of a bedroom. She said he tried to walk past her and she asked who he was. She said he said he was looking for someone. She said he punched her in the shoulder and on the back of the head with a closed fist, and she screamed for her mother. The intruder left. The mother followed him out the driveway while her daughter called 911.

He was stopped by a sheriff's deputy. Five pieces of jewelry were found in his pants pocket, the complaint said. The jewelry was allegedly taken from the bedroom.

Aguilar told deputies that he stopped at the residence because his car was overheating. He said he knocked on the door and said "hello" about four times but no one answered. He said the door was not locked and he went inside. He said he went into the bedroom and took the necklaces. He said he pushed the woman hard but did not hit her on the head.

The complaint says Aguilar is wanted in Dakota County. He was identified via fingerprints. The complaint says he is an illegal alien who has been deported twice. His home country is not identified in the complaint.
