    Alleged Illegal Immigrant Arrested for Child Abuse



    A possible illegal immigrant is in custody after allegedly beating a 15 month old child. That child is now on life support at a Springfield hospital. 25-year-old Esvin Lopez Mendez is charged with first-degree assault and violation of U.S. Immigration Law. He's being held at the Jasper County Detention Center without bond. The victim is the daughter of Mendez's girlfriend. The 15-month-old girl and her 2-month-old brother are in protective custody.

    Illegal alien living in Carthage charged with assaulting a toddler

    CARTHAGE, MO. - A 15 month old Carthage girl is on life support Friday night after being abused by a man police say is in the country illegally.

    Police say Esvin Mendez allegedly abused the toddler and is charged with first degree assault.

    The toddler was his girlfriend's daughter.

    The Jasper County sheriff's office says the baby was taken to McCune Brooks Hospital on Wednesday - unresponsive.

    She has since been transferred to Children's Mercy in Kansas City and placed on life support.

    Authorities say they do not yet know the full extent of the girl's injuries.

    They say Mendez, who is from Guatemala, and his girlfriend have a two month old baby boy together.

    The sheriff's office and the Carthage Police Department are investigating.
