Moderates lose round in fight on state GOP platform

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Republicans blocked an attempt by party moderates to push the GOP toward the center on immigration, abortion and gay rights.
The closely divided vote Sunday by a California Republican Party committee in Los Angeles marked the latest friction between conservatives and centrists over the direction of the state GOP.
Moderates pushed through a draft of the state party platform earlier this year that dropped a demand to end virtually all benefits for illegal immigrants, retreated from opposition to same-sex adoption and avoided any mention of overturning Roe v. Wade.
With a push from conservatives, a committee at the biannual California Republican convention rejected those changes to the party's current platform.
The vote was preliminary — the party will not adopt a final version of its platform until next year.
