Fremont, Neb., residents hoping to revive ban on illegals

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) -- Some Fremont residents are trying to keep a rejected illegal immigration ordinance alive.

The effort comes three weeks after a measure banning renting to and hiring illegal immigrants failed to win City Council approval.

Petition drive organizers had hoped to get the measure on the November ballot. But that plan would have required turning in enough verified signatures and getting the council to approve a resolution by Sept. 2.

Organizers turned in new paperwork this week aiming for a special election. To force one they would have to collect almost 3,000 signatures and have six months to do it.

The city would have to pay for a special election. Dodge County election officials say such an election could cost $17,000.
