More local police are calling ICE

ICE statistics show that local police in Arizona are more likely than in past years to call ICE when they encounter suspected illegal immigrants.

Since the start of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, 2007,Immigration and Customs Enforcement has received 966 calls for assistance from local law-enforcement agencies, ICE spokesman Vincent Picard said. That is a 36 percent increase from the 709 calls for assistance ICE received during the same period the year before.

As a result of the calls, ICE officials have arrested 4,825 illegal-immigration suspects so far this fiscal year, a 14 percent increase from the 4,208 arrested during the same period last year.
