More than 400 migrants cross border, surrender to Border Patrol in El Paso's Lower Valley

More than 400 undocumented immigrants on Monday crossed the border to surrender to the U.S. Border Patrol in El Paso.

A group of men, women and children surrendered to agents along the Rio Grande levee next to the border fence in the Riverside area of the Lower Valley, said Agent Fidel Baca, an agency spokesman.

The group was the latest in an increase in recent weeks of groups of large number of migrants crossing the Texas border to turn themselves in in a bid for political asylum.

Border Patrol initially detained 200 people but the number had jumped to 400 by Monday evening, including a group found east of the Zaragoza Bridge, Baca said.

It was not known if the migrants were part of the Central American caravans making their way through Mexico, Baca said.

The countries where the migrants are from were not immediately disclosed.

The migrants were taken into custody and will be processed. A determination will be made whether they will be prosecuted for illegal entry, Baca said.

A group of about 130 migrants surrendered Monday morning on the border near Fonseca Drive and were taken away by Border Patrol buses.

There were about 90 migrants left waiting with agents, and then a group of about 30 more showed up while an El Paso Times photographer was at the scene.

Some migrants were then taken away in Border Patrol vehicles, while about 60 migrants were left waiting while being watched by a single agent.

A wave of Central American migrants seeking political asylum in the United States began arriving in Juárez in October.

The migrants are made to wait in Mexico by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who has said it doesn't have the facility space at the international bridges for large groups.

Last month, more than 100 migrants were sleeping on the Paso Del Norte international bridge connecting El Paso and Juárez, waiting to be allowed into the U.S. until Mexican authorities made them go to a migrant shelter.

Migrants processed by U.S. immigration authorities are then released to the streets pending asylum hearings.

A network of shelters set up by churches and civic groups in El Paso and Las Cruces have been temporarily housing the migrants before they make their way to destinations in other parts of the nation.

Where is the National Guard or the Military to do the baby sitting while the Border Patrol do the arresting.

The behavior in that picture is very inappropriate and I would say the same if it was a citizen being arrested. JMO

Hundreds of migrants request asylum with Border Patrol near Ascarate

    Migrants taken into custody

Hundreds of migrants seek asylum in El Paso

El Paso, Texas - U.S. Border Patrol agents took more than 400 migrants into custody Monday morning after the migrants turned themselves in at the border fence, just south of Ascarate Park.

The migrants were walking on the U.S. side of the border near the border fence that runs along the Cesar E. Chavez Border Highway.

They weren't all traveling together and were taken into custody in groups throughout the day, the Border Patrol said.

Earlier Monday, the Border Patrol reported about 200 migrants had turned themselves in. Later Monday, that figure increased to more than 400.

Authorities also said the migrants had not crossed over the border fence, and instead turned themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol agents stationed at an opening along the fence.

That opening is located near Midway Dr. in El Paso's lower valley.

ABC-7 spoke with Mary Juarez, who lives in the neighborhood off the Border Highway near the border fence. Juarez said she is not bothered much by the migrants trying to enter the US, but "we do have to take precautions and lock up our doors now and be very watchful with our children." Juarez said she understands why the migrants are coming to the US. "They see what we have here, so they're trying to do the same thing and I understand where they're coming from, but they need to do it the right way," she said.

Joe Romero, a spokesman with the U.S. Border Patrol, told ABC-7 the migrants are part of a caravan of people who are requesting asylum in the U.S. Several children were part of the groups taken into custody Monday. Romero said a lot of the people who were traveling together were family units.

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation last month that barred anyone who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border between official ports of entry from seeking asylum, but a federal judge on Friday upheld his ruling, blocking that ban.

The judge sided with legal groups who argued that federal law is clear that immigrants in the U.S. can request asylum regardless of whether they entered legally. The Trump Administration is appealing the judge's ruling.

Such a shame. The law needs to be changed, and now it won't ever be. Americans cut their own throats on November 6, 2018. It's so sad.

The Republicans had 2 years to change these horrible laws, and they did not do it, and that is reason we have these current problems.

And now the current problem is the current problem forever. You're obviously quite pleased with the outcome of the elections so you can be quite pleased the results of it.

This is happening NOW! You are obviously quite happy with what is happening now, because you defend the R's even when they are still currently in charge, will be in charge until Jan. and have been in charge for 2 years. No, I do not expect it to get any better, but in 2016 I most certainly did expect it to improve, instead of get worse.

Just because some folks don't constantly whine about the recent election results does not mean they are pleased or support the Democrats taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives. It is what it is and it's time to accept it and move on

If some folks think all is lost and want to surrender, that's on them! However, they shouldn't expect everyone else to give up or publicly whine about something they have no control over.
