Teen at the crosshairs of Nashville’s crime-fighting focus

Jose Sosa, an illegal Honduran immigrant, was indicted last week by a Davidson County grand jury for the brutal stabbing of a mother and daughter inside their South Nashville home.

Sosa, who at the time of the April 24 murders was 16, lived with five Hispanic males directly next door to the victims, Lori and Adrien Rountree, according to police testimony.

The 44-year-old mother and her 16-year-old daughter had apparently been sleeping when police say Sosa forced his way into the home and stabbed the two of them repeatedly in their chests
and backs.

According to Metro Detective Brian Corcoran, who testified at Sosa’s juvenile transfer hearing, Lori Roundtree’s body was found with 37 stab wounds and Adrien’s was found with 46.

Prints lifted off of what police believe was the kitchen knife used in the stabbings matched those of Sosa, Corcoran said.

Police have yet to say what motive they think Sosa may have had – other than a possible robbery – in the slayings.

Sosa is being tried as an adult, and has remained in police custody since his May 11 arrest.
Sosa’s case directly illustrates two of the most serious problems Metro Police say they have faced this year: an increase in the amount of violent offenses committed by teenagers and about criminal offenses committed by illegal immigrants.

In July, the police department reported that the number of juveniles arrested and charged with violent crimes within the first six months of 2006 had increased 20 percent over the first six months of 2005.

At the same time, Assistant District Attorney Jeff Burks who – along with Jon Seaborg – handles most of the office’s cases involving juvenile criminal offenders, said the number of cases being transferred from Juvenile Court to Criminal Court has “clearly increased” over 2005.

But violent and often deadly crimes being committed by teens are only half of the problem, according to much of Nashville’s law enforcement community.

Illegal immigrants have been accused of a number of high-profile criminal offenses committed in the area.

Many of the accused had been deported, as well as arrested, previously – prompting Sheriff Daron Hall to ask the federal government for access to a
program that would allow the Sheriff to identify and deport any illegal immigrant arrested and booked
into Metro jail.

Sosa, who is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, had previously been deported from the United States.

The Sheriff, Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas and District Attorney Torry Johnson have pointed to Sosa’s case as one that led them to conclude that Davidson County needed a new approach – other than simply waiting for the federal government to get itself involved – when it came to dealing with criminal illegal immigrants.

A 16-year-old south Nashville boy has been indicted on charges he stabbed to death a mother and daughter who were his next-door neighbors.

Jose Presentacion Sosa, who police said is a Honduran immigrant in the U.S. illegally, faces two counts of first-degree murder in the April 25 slayings of Lori Ann Rountree, 44, and her daughter, Adrien, 16.

The grisly crime was discovered after Lori Ann Rountree, a nanny, didn't show up to work in Belle Meade.

Reached Monday, Sosa's attorney declined to comment on the charges.

"It's very early in the case," assistant public defender Suzanne Meiners-Levy said. "We really don't feel comfortable commenting at this time."

The Rountree case was among several recent high-profile crimes in the Midstate in which undocumented immigrants were arrested. The problem has prompted local authorities to apply for a federal program that would allow sheriff's deputies to check the immigration status of every foreign-born inmate booked into the Metro Jail.

Three of Sosa's fingerprints — one bloody — were found on a back door of the Rountrees' Creekside Drive home, police have said. At least one other fingerprint was found inside the home.

Investigators said they have not determined a motive for the killings.

Lori Ann Rountree was found lying in the doorway of a bedroom, police said. An autopsy found she had been stabbed 46 times.

A metal fragment was lodged in Lori Ann Rountree's skull, according to the medical examiner's report.

Her daughter, found lying on a bed in the same room, had been stabbed 39 times.

Investigators are awaiting test results to determine if either of the victims was sexually assaulted.

A date for Sosa's arraignment was not available Monday. •

Every single time a horrific crime is committed by an illegal alien, it should be laid in the President's lap. Every time an American is a victim of a crime committed by an illegal alien, it should be laid in the President's lap. He has lost touch with reality. He wouldn't know reality if it smacked him upside the head!
