    Mothers' Tracking Devices Removed

    (WOMENSENEWS)--

    Cheers

Just in time for New Year's, electronic monitoring devices were removed on Dec. 30 from the ankles of 11 immigrant mothers detained in Postville, Iowa, following a massive military-style immigration raid in May 2008, Women's eNews learned Jan. 11.

Women's eNews first reported the continued shackling on December 17.

"The monitors are off all the ladies," said Violeta Aleman, a bilingual legal assistant at St. Bridget's Roman Catholic Church in Postville. Through its Hispanic Ministry, the church has helped immigrants prohibited from working but forbidden to leave the state pay for rent, food, heating and medical bills for themselves and their children.

"The ladies were receiving phone calls from an office in Omaha and they were really scared," Aleman said. "But now they are very happy the GPS devices are finally off."

Tim Counts, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confirmed the removal of the tracking devices. He said the women would be required to check in with authorities as their cases wend their way through the federal immigration court system. He said he does not know why the decision was made to remove the monitors after 19 months and because of privacy regulations could not comment on individual cases if he did know.

Several of the women expect to be called as witnesses in upcoming court cases connected with the raid, Counts said. Others are appealing their deportation order, he said.

The women, Guatemalan and Mexican immigrants who came to work at Agriprocessors, a Kosher meat processing plant, were among 389 undocumented workers arrested in the raid. More than a year and a half later, 11 of them still had to wear what they referred to as "shackles" 24 hours a day. The devices took two hours a day to charge and caused bruising and skin irritation. Several of the women said they felt humiliated by being designated as criminals for wanting to work to support their children.

The women were HUMILIATED? Ever consider they broke a bunch of laws, and IMO, are not more than common criminals. Let's see how many of them actually "report in" or disappear into the population while dropping more anchor babies.

It seems that every time we look, there are excuses for releasing or issuing a stay from deportation. Why can't government, law enforcement, and others just stand their ground and say NO.

Illegal aliens released, would not generally want to stay around so that they can be caught again, if at all possible. They can just assume another name, flee the country, or possibly use the liberal media for more attention.

I don't particularly care if they're humiliated - they ARE criminals.

Because of Napolitano's gag order. They don't want the truth out, which will clearly point the finger at the top. Where's the accountability?

Why did they have children that they didn't think they could support and feed in their homeland?

Pregnant illegal aliens need to be reported and then deported when they show up for prenatal services. This would prevent them from giving birth here in the first place and draining the taxpayers dry. The law must be enforced with the nonworking illegal dependents as much as is it with their American job taking significant others. America, wake up and stop birthright citizenship before it's too late!

The 14th Amendment needs to be reinterpreted, but with Sotomayor on the court calling illegals "undocumented immigrants" we may see the rest of the world become citizens if there was an American in country. After all, wasn't it Vincente Fox (former el presidente de Mexico) that announced to the world that wherever there was a Mexican, there was Mexico? While Sotomayor is not of Mexican heritage, she has already proven that her bent is giving the country away to illegals (preferably Hispanics) through her first opinion on the court.

They should have kept the ankle bracelets. Otherwise, there's no way to know that they'll show up to testify or later show up for their Deportation Order when it's issued.
