Husband told: 'Take care of the baby'

LAUREL - Caesar Mareno sat in the office of Peniel Christian Church on Monday with tears in his eyes. His 5-year old daughter played at his side, unaware that her mother wouldn't be coming home from work.

Maria-Elena Mareno is one of 350 people detained in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on Howard Industries Monday. Federal agents initiated the raid in the morning, executing federal warrants that allowed them to interview all plant workers to determine whether they are in the country legally.

"She called this morning," Mareno said through a translator. "She told me that she didn't know if she would be allowed to leave and to take care of the baby."

Mareno said his wife had been employed as a painter at Howard Industries for four years. The Marenos have been residents of Laurel for eight years, he said, and have been married for four.

The Marenos are also members of Peniel Christian Church in Laurel, which set up its own staging area Monday for workers and families trying to get information, said the Rev. Roberto Valez, pastor of the church.

"Anybody that needs help can come here," he said. "People who are afraid, people that need a place to stay, people that need help getting information, they are all welcome here. "

Valez said the church had picked up children from several schools in the Laurel area, including West Jones Elementary, because of reports that undocumented children would be taken. ICE does not take custody of children from schools or homes, although social services might, said Brandon Montgomery, a public affairs spokesman for ICE.

"We don't go into schools or homes and sweep people up," he said. "ICE does carry out fugitive operations where someone does not comply with an order of removal, but that is not what is taking place today."

The atmosphere in the Peniel church was one of fear. Men and women talked on cell phones, attempting to reach their loved ones as others cooked food and watched children.

"I can't criticize the government because the law is on their side and they have to enforce the law," Valez said. "But I can criticize the aftermath and what this is going to do to families. I worry about the children that don't have parents to come home to tonight and the families that need their loved ones to survive."

Mareno said he was waiting to hear from his wife before making any decisions about the future, although his options include returning to Mexico.

"What can I say?" he said. "Sooner or later it is going to happen. You just never figure that it will happen to you."

Most honest Illegal quote i've read in a long time . But , Illegal does mean you broke a standing law and you knew it . Now with Mexico having a major amount of what was once American jobs for American workers . Why are they the Illegal still invading to pick up the left over . NWO total destruction of America ?

He should be criticizing himself about the aftermath, a problem of his own creation!

Yet they fly the mexican flag! Viva la mexico this and viva la mexico that! which is why i will never have respect for these people with their hands out to the american people while spitting in our faces and preaching how their culture and country is better than the USA.
