ICE places hold on driver involved in fatal crash
By ROBIN FITZGERALD

GULFPORT -- A federal agency today placed a hold on a driver who was involved in a fatal crash in Harrison County over the weekend.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Ramon Acenscio Cornejo, a native of El Salavador, after the Sun Herald made phone calls inquiring on whether he has legal documentation to be in this country.

ICE spokesman Temple Black confirmed a hold was placed on Cornejo, 30, at the Harrison County jail. A hold means a pre-trial detainee cannot be released until the reason for the detainer is resolved.

Harrison County deputies arrested Cornejo on Saturday night after he was released from a hospital. Cornejo is charged with misdemeanors including drunken driving and having no driver's license or insurance. His bond on the misdemeanors total $1,500.

The victim, 23-year-old Cardenas Gruevara Cruz, of Mexico, was wearing a seat belt but was driving in the wrong lane when the collision occurred on Canal Road near Tillman Road, county officials confirmed today.
