Subject: One American Daughter's Quest for Answers in Tennessee
This is what I found in just one small area of America, my area, and which I see being repeated again and again all over America.
Memphis, Tennessee my town. My father's 5th great grandfather came to Tennessee in 1796. My mother's 5th great grandmother was already here a Cherokee lady whose ancestors had lived in the area for many generations.
I take morning walks with my daughter around a track near our home. Recently on a walk 3 Mexicans were digging holes for street lights going up in our neighborhood and they actually stopped work to watch us going to and coming from the track which is strange behavior in our area. The next day 3 black men were at work on our street also digging holes and I went out and spoke with them. I asked them if Mexicans were taking jobs from black people in Memphis and all 3 of these nice, hard-working black men said "yes, and they don't even speak english. They also said these Mexicans were being sub-contracted by our local power company from other companies. I was born in Memphis and my parents and I have had black friends over the years who were valued for their kindness, hard-work and philosophy of life. Seeing what is going on here prompted me to write the NAACP with the information and I received a long Email which read like a strategy paper for the Republican or Democratic National Committees. No Help Here.
I spoke with 2 people who work at a school which helps people get a GED and learn english who assured me that black kids were not suffering for lack of help as a result of illegal Mexicans demands on the system. These people work for the City of Memphis Education System which is majority black and which turns a blind eye to young black men roaming the streets with no jobs and no future. In fact, I was told by one of the educators I spoke with "some people can't be helped". A 2001 report on Tennessee's Children states that 20 to 39% of Tennesseans are functionally illiterate.

UPDATE - October, 2007....while waiting in a doctor's office a black man and an elderly white woman(me) were looking out the window at a crew of latinos building an adjoining office building. We started to discuss the impact of illegal aliens on the black community and I asked him if there was no black minister in Memphis who would address this issue. I wrote down his words are here they are "THEY ARE ALL AFRAID".

THIS FIGHT ISN'T JUST IMPACTING WHITE WORKERS - OUR BLACK BROTHERS ARE HURT TO A MUCH GREATER EXTENT. AND WHERE ARE THE LIKES OF JESSIE JACKSON AND AL SHARPTON????????

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE WORD "POLITICIAN" HAS COME TO REPRESENT "ALL THAT IS EVIL AND SELF-SERVING" IN AMERICA.
