On Sunday, April 18 at approximately 5:33p.m., a Mono County Deputy conducted a traffic stop in Walker Canyon on a vehicle for several minor traffic violations. The Deputy contacted the driver of the vehicle, identified as Ms. Verenisse Vasquez-Cancino age 27, a resident of Santa Ana, Calif. and the passenger Alfonso Guzman age 19, a resident of Orange Calif.
During the subsequent investigation, the Deputy determined that Vasquez-Cancino had no personal identification in her name, but had in her possession a credit card and other forms of identification or documents in names other than her own. Due to the belief that Vasquez-Cancino could be a false name, given the other items she was in possession of, the Deputy asked her to respond to the Bridgeport Sheriff Station to be positively identified (Cal-ID), to which she agreed.
Positive identification (fingerprints) did in fact confirm that she was indeed who she said she was, Vasquez-Cancino was released with only a citation for being an unlicensed driver.
In the days following the initial traffic stop, follow-up was conducted with the DMV Law Enforcement Record Division, Orange County Register of Birth Records, Fountain Valley Police Department, U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, a resident in Redwood City and a credit card investigative company.
The information gathered from the follow-up, along with statements from the initial contact with Vasquez-Cancino, makes it appear that she obtained various forms of identification such as a California driver’s license, a social security card, a U.S. passport and various credit cards in names other than her own.
Due to this new information, Vasquez-Cancino could be facing charges ranging from perjury to false impersonation of another, either within the Mono County Court system or in other various County’s jurisdictions. – Mono County Sheriff’s Dept. Press Release
