Trucker arrested for possession of cocaine

A Bakersfield man has been arrested on drug charges after he and another man were allegedly caught with $1.5 million of cocaine.

Mario Melgar, 46, a truck driver from Moreno Valley, and his passenger, Jose Aquirre, 40, were pulled over Sunday in Tennessee for speeding.

Once the state trooper pulled them over, he looked at their log book, which showed they had violated the 11-hour driving time.

Another deputy and police dog were called out, and the dog smelled drugs in the back trailer.

Melgar told investigators there were no drugs and agreed to a search, but Aquirre started acting nervous and said they were hauling drugs, police said.

Officials said they found 130 pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of $1.5 million.

The DEA will bring charges in the case in federal court
