An undocumented immigrant who attempted to rob at gunpoint a 17-year-old at an Amarillo elementary school is facing more than five years in prison.

Randel Santoyo-Carrillo, a Mexican citizen, and four other unnamed men confronted the victim at Whittier Elementary School in November 2010, demanding his cellphone and car keys, according to the defendant's plea. The victim gave him the keys and noticed Santoyo-Carrillo was holding a small revolver close to his body.

Santoyo-Carrillo, who pleaded guilty, and the four men drove away in the victim's car, federal records show.

The victim called the police shortly after the incident, and they located the vehicle, which had been involved in a one-car accident, court records state. Authorities, who saw the five men run away from the wreck, chased Santoyo-Carrillo, who was seen throwing the Rossi Model 69, .32-caliber revolver over a fence as he fled. Police eventually captured Santoyo-Carrillo and found the gun, according to the defendant's plea.

Santoyo-Carrillo later admitted to authorities that he owned the gun, which was manufactured in Brazil and imported by Interarms in Alexandria, Va.
