CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Seven people from Houston have pleaded guilty in a South Texas weapons smuggling ring with ties to Mexico.

Federal prosecutors in Corpus Christi say 39-year-old Javier Resendez pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to traffic AK-47-type rifles.

Resendez also pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in an investigation since a 2013 traffic stop in Kingsville. More than 30 rifles were seized, along with $26,000 hidden in a truck bound from Houston to McAllen.

Other weapons were recovered during searches earlier this year in Houston.

Six people previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy-related weapons counts and await sentencing.

All seven defendants face up to five years in prison. Resendez could get an additional 10 years. Further details weren't immediately available on his previous conviction.
