Speeding N.M. truck holds half ton of marijuana

Nov 27, 2008

EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Battle Creek-area police say they found nearly half a ton of marijuana inside a bundle of plywood on a truck they stopped for speeding on eastbound Interstate 94.

Police in Calhoun County's Emmett Township stopped the truck on Thanksgiving and say they became suspicious after the driver gave evasive answers.

Police say they arrested the 50-year-old New Mexico man on a warrant on charges of transporting illegal aliens. They didn't release his name.

A police dog detected drugs, and investigators got a search warrant.

Investigators tell the Battle Creek Enquirer they found 959 pounds of marijuana in plastic packages inside the plywood bundle. They say the marijuana's worth more than $1 million.
