In Drug War, Tribe Feels Invaded by Both Sides

SELLS, Ariz. — An eerie hush settles in at sundown on the Tohono O’odham Nation, which straddles 75 miles of border with Mexico.

Few residents leave their homes. The roads crawl with the trucks of Border Patrol agents, who stop unfamiliar vehicles, scrutinize back roads for footprints and hike into the desert wilds to intercept smugglers carrying marijuana on their backs and droves of migrants trying to make it north.

By the bad luck of geography, the only large Indian reservation on the embattled border is caught in the middle, emerging as a major transit point for drugs as well as people.

A long-insular tribe of 28,000 people and its culture are paying a steep price: the land is swarming with outsiders, residents are afraid to walk in the hallowed desert, and some members, lured by drug cartel cash in a place with high unemployment, are ending up in prison.

Legalize/regulate/tax under the FairTax, the illegal drug trade and let Americans and Indian Tribes own, operate and run this drug trade under a civil code and licenses that excludes all non-citizens and foreign entities.

Wait a second here, half the tribe lives south of the border? Then I would imagine they have been involved in the drug trade the whole time. Put up a fence for christ's sake, and stop the nonsense.

A fence should include infrared cameras and underground sensors. We will do this. It's now or never. Of course these Mexican Indians won't want that!

No, 1,500 members of the tribe live in Mexico, out of 28,000 tribe members. That's only 5% not 50%.

American Indians love organized crime. I'm sad about the old lady not being able to pick berries and gather firewood, but hey, I'm more worried about the cartel scouts on the mountaintops. Yeah, screw that Mexican shake!! I agree 100% But our War on Drugs sends the Americans to prison while the foreign drug cartels control the trade in over 230 US citizens rake in hundreds of billions of dollars.

I totally support shutting down the foreign drug trade. But it will take more than some choppers and Infra-red out there to stop it. We have to legalize the drug trade in the US, license US CITIZENS ONLY to grow, manufacture, process, distribute and sell under a license subject to regulations enforced under a civil code to stop drug smuggling into the US and foreign-drug-trafficking. Then some choppers and Infra-red paid for with the FairTaxes paid for the products at the time of purchase will work to shut down the handful of idiots trying to compete with Americans running their own drug trade and keep them out of the US drug business and out of country at the same time.
