No Illegal Immigrant Detention Facility for Charlotte

Charlotte won't be getting a federal detention center for illegal immigrants, but the facility could be built elsewhere our area.

The Mecklenburg County sheriff's office had been pushing for it to take some of the pressure off its jail space.

Today Representative Sue Myrick issued a statement saying Gaston County could be one of its options.

No word from the feds yet on why the idea was scrapped.

Whatever happened with the immigration court they were going open in Charlotte? Did he happen or was it just another false alarm?

mabe those FEMA det centers will be used, 600 of them across the USA, empty, up and running and waiting. its said , they are for "an illegal alien uprising".

Federal officials have begun talking to Gaston County leaders about the possibility of locating a detention and deportation facility here.

The facility would house illegal immigrants awaiting deportation.

So far, the talk has not moved beyond phone calls and discussions to gauge the county’s interest.

I havent heard anything since march, when it was approved. Would assume they need the detention facility close by for the illegals coming out of the court...

These people are wrapped up in the mercy of the big banks and we know which club the internationalist are in. When the city is dependent of the trillions going through Charlotte, they are slaves to them and this is how they pay for their big city agenda.

As a life long citizen of Charlotte, I have to get out 2 years ago. The place is infested with hundreds of thousands of illegals and parts of the city are unrecognisable in just 5 or 6 years. Its a travisty. I used to love Charlotte and it used to be a great city for families. But now it is full of nothing but PCism and big money interest that want to give everything to the foreigners and suck everything from the lifelong citizens to pay for it.

The truth is Sue Myrick can't stand up to the trillions of dollars going through Charlotte. She could have the support of 100,000 people and it wouldn't do any good. The only thing that will do any good is when people stop using BOA and Wachovia Services. That might make a small dent in the money flow and force them to take their eyes off their agenda for a minute...Nah, it won't happen....to many people on the BOA and Wachovia and City of Charlotte payroll and as long as they are making money off the corruption all is hush hush!

Officials considering county for illegal immigrants center

Federal officials are considering opening a detention center for illegal immigrants in Gaston County as questions remain about why plans for a Charlotte facility were scrapped.

"Due to insurmountable obstacles, we have stopped pursuing locations to build a detention and deportation facility in Mecklenburg County," Rep. Sue Myrick, a Republican from Charlotte, said in a written statement. "We are currently reassessing our options, and Gaston County could be one of the options."

Former Sheriff Jim Pendergraph worked with Myrick to bring a detention center to Mecklenburg County. It's unclear whether his departure or controversy over his replacement had anything to do with the change.

Pendergraph, who left last year for a federal immigration job, said Friday he isn't sure why Mecklenburg County is no longer being considered.

"I don't know who pulled the plug," he said. "I think Sue Myrick realized there wasn't enough interest in Mecklenburg County and started looking elsewhere."

Gaston County manager Jan Winters said he was involved in an informal discussion on the center.

"There's a lot more to learn about it and we don't have that information," Winters said. "It's too early to say we are pursuing it.

"Obviously our willingness and ability to participate would have to depend upon a lot of questions being answered. We are nowhere near that."

Local and federal officials were cryptic about why Mecklenburg's negotiations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement had fallen apart.

Myrick would only say that she would inform the public "as things become more clear and concrete."

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones was in a meeting Friday and didn't return a call seeking comment, but a day earlier had informed county officials in an e-mail that Myrick told him Mecklenburg was no longer being considered.

Jennifer Roberts, chairman of the county commission, said she didn't know what happened but said commissioners had concerns about the cost of the facility, staffing and location. Roberts said she also heard from residents who disliked the idea of Charlotte being associated with such a facility.

Mecklenburg also is without a permanent sheriff. The county's Democratic Party has recommended appointing lawyer Nick Mackey as sheriff, but the issue is unresolved as county commissioners examine the selection process. Acting Sheriff Chipp Bailey is also seeking appointment.

ICE spokesman Richard Rocha said he couldn't discuss what prompted federal officials to turn to Gaston County or what the criteria is for getting a new detention center.

"We don't get into specifics of where we're looking," Rocha said. "As a result of heightened immigration enforcement ... ICE is continually exploring options to expand its detention capabilities.

An immigration court, operated through the U.S. Department of Justice, is scheduled to be opened in Charlotte this spring.

"I thought since we were approved for the court that it only makes sense that you'd have a detention facility," said Alan Gordon, an immigration attorney who heads Charlotte's international cabinet.

"There's a lot of people who have to wait to see a judge to get a benefit. It's not just about deportation," Gordon said. "Only judges have the authority to grant certain benefits at immigration proceedings."

Rocha said there are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country, and 273,000 were removed last year.

He said the federal detention budget would increase this year to a capacity of 28,450 beds, up from 27,500 last year.
