N.C. Organizations Expect Increase of Refugees

(06/15/07 -- RALEIGH) - Two North Carolina organizations that help refugees have announced they're preparing for the arrival of 350 people by October.

Officials from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants and Lutheran Family Services in the Carolinas say that's a large increase.
The groups found out about the increase from a U.S. State Department memo, which says agencies should expect a large number of Burmese and African refugees.

After refugees arrive, resettlement groups help them find lodging, apply for green cards, seek jobs and enroll in education programs.

According to the memo, between 21-thousand and 30-thousand refugees will arrive in the U.S. by October.
