BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Tuesday night, State Representative Carolyn Justice said she's surprised many local law enforcement agencies aren't taking advantage of 287 G, a federal program to train local officers to arrest and deport illegal immigrants, but sheriffs in the area say they've tried to take advantage of the program with no success.

According to Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram, his department applied for 287 G, but were put on hold.

"When the program was enacted it was set up to have federal supervising local agents that were in the program, and the funding is not there at this time," said Ingram. "So, many agencies are on hold until they receive funding."

Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith explained when his agency went out for 287 G they were turned down, because the program had too many requests.

According to the executive vice president for the NC's Sheriff's Association, 287 G is aimed at large counties with a large population of illegal immigrants and a high number of arrests.

Though they don't have 287 G in Brunswick County, Ingram said his team will keep an eye on illegal immigrants by using the Secured Communities Program.
