LAS CRUCES — A man wanted for homicide in Aurora, Colo., was picked up last week in Doña Ana County just minutes before he was about to cross into Mexico, authorities said.
On Jan. 7, agents from Metro-Narcotics and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were working a special project on vehicles headed into Mexico at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry when the apprehension took place, said Sgt. Joseph Gonzales of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department.

Gonzales said while talking with the man, agents became suspicious of the way he was acting, and he was unable to provide any type of identification. Further investigation uncovered that 30-year-old Gabriel Vasquez was wanted for murder in Colorado.

A fake identification card with an alias was found on Vasquez, Gonzales said.

Vasquez was taken into custody as a fugitive from justice and was being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Colorado. Gonzales did not have details of the Aurora slaying.
