License verification endeavor slogs along

ALBUQUERQUE - Gov. Susana Martinez's office says more than a quarter of the letters her office sent out to verify whether immigrants who received a New Mexico driver's license continue to be residents of the state have been returned by the post office.
The license check covers a random sample of 10,000 license holders who are foreign nationals.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/nLtcUZ ) that 2,812 of the letters mailed out have been returned by the post office for various reasons.

Fewer than 15 percent of those who received the letters have either scheduled or showed up for residency verification appointments.

So far, 1,449 residency verification appointments have been scheduled and nearly three-fifths of those appointments have taken place.

Just over 400 people have had their residency approved and their driver's licenses certified.
