Alleged illegal immigrant arrested after chase in Orleans County

An alleged illegal immigrant was jailed last night after a police pursuit through two Orleans County towns.

Orleans County Deputy David Foeller Jr. tried to stop a vehicle speeding west on State Route 31A just after 8 p.m., according to Orleans County Sheriff Scott Hess.

The driver fled and a chase continued south on State Route 98 to Barre, Orleans County. The driver stopped the vehicle on the northbound lane of Route 98, and ran from the vehicle.

Foeller chased the man on foot and stopped him using a Taser. Foeller Tasered the man again while apprehending him.

Efrain Lopez-Contreras, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawfully fleeing from police, unlawful possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. Deputies said his address is unknown.

Lopez-Contreras was arraigned in Barre Town Court and was remanded to the Orleans County Jail on $2,000 cash bail, deputies said.

A detainer was placed against Lopez-Contreras by the U.S. Border Patrol. He is accused of having re-entered the country after he was previously deported.
