WASHINGTON — A U.S.-owned commercial truck became the first to drive deep into Mexico on Friday, days after the Senate voted to quit funding a program allowing Mexican trucks to do the same in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said a truck owned by El Paso-based Stagecoach Cartage and Distribution entered at Nogales, Mexico, across the border from Nogales, Ariz., late Friday morning. U.S. trucks had been banned from operating on Mexican roads.

The truck was delivering a load of plastic resin to Obregon, Mexico, about 270 miles from the Arizona border.

"Today is historic. We're giving U.S. trucking companies the opportunity to compete in a new market that they have never before been allowed to penetrate," said John Hill, head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate voted to prevent Mexican trucks from getting more access to U.S. highways by prohibiting spending on an ongoing pilot project. The House has taken similar action. The measures are attached to separate transportation spending bills that must still be reconciled.

A truck owned by Mexican carrier Transportes Olympic arrived in North Carolina on Monday under the free trade pilot program.

Mexican trucks have been limited since 1982 to driving up to 25 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, 75 miles in Arizona.

Trucks from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. were given access to all three countries under the North American Free Trade Agreement signed in 1993.

But opposition from organized labor and safety groups delayed Mexican trucks from driving further into the United States.

    Hi Jimpasz,

Last week I talked to an Interstate Trucker and brought up the mexican trucker subject. He told me that he had driven into border towns in the past, and everything not locked down ends up stolen. He told me that under NAFTA/CAFTA, if he drove into mexico, at best he would end up returning on a bus (he would lose his entire rig to the mexicans), and at worse he wouldn't be alive to tell about it.

Furthermore, Jimpasz, he told me that this law will shut down the US trucking profession; mexican trucking companies are charging way below the cost it takes an owner-operator to break even.

Well, this is exactly what John Cornyn wants - mexicans, and H-1Bs (from India) running the country. BRIBE$

What part of "We don't owe our jobs to India" are you unable to understand, Senator?

Another asinine statement from a spineless, open borders bureaucrat. I have one question for this socialist anti-American U.S. government employee...what opportunity to compete???

Americans are never allowed to compete. All the agreements are set up to allow other countries to take over our trade and allow big businesses to export jobs from America. big business has forgotten that America made them big business and it looks like it is time for us to go back to buying items made in america from the smaller businesses. it might cost a little more but we really need to support our industry.

So we have one U.S trucker foolish enough to go deep into the anarchist, durg cartel ruled cesspool of Mexico and we have thousands of Mexican trucks lumbering all over our highways....and that's an opportunity to compete?

Exactly! I would hate to be an American at a Mexican truck stop!

We can't even go to Home Depot without giving the security guard some cash to watch our trucks in the parking lot! Thieves are using two-way walkie talkies...one guy following a customer around in the store while his partner is out in the parking lot stealing everything out of the customer's truck bed!

Come on, this company is based in El Paso, the driver was probably not an Americans, but a Mexican with a green card.
