Deported Mexican busted on drug charges in Carmel

CARMEL - A Bronx man, once deported to his native Mexico after serving jail time on a drug conviction, is being held without bail at the Putnam County jail after Carmel police found numerous drugs in his car during a traffic stop, Chief Michael Johnson said today.

Marcos Archundia, 44, was driving on Route 6 near Colonel Glenn Drive around 12:30 p.m. yesterday when Lt. Brian Karst pulled him over for a traffic violation, police said. Karst asked Archundia to get out of the car after seeing a plastic bag with yellow pills in the cup holder, police said.

Officer Kevin Murphy responded as backup and patted Archundia down after the driver kept placing his hands in his pockets. Murphy found marijuana in Archundia's pocket and placed him under arrest, police said.

Police then searched the car, finding cocaine and what appeared to be several prescription pills, Johnson said.

Archundia gave the police a forged Pennsylvania driver's license and ID card, police said. The officers took his fingerprints and were able to determine his identity and criminal history, which Johnson described as "extensive."

Archundia was deported to his native Mexico in April 2008 after serving time in a state prison on a felony drug conviction out of Westchester County.

Carmel police charged him with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony; false personation, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, two count of criminal possession of a false instrument, misdemeanors; unlawful possession of marijuana, being an unlicensed driver and failure to use a turn signal, violations, police said.

Archundia was ordered held at the Putnam County jail, where he remains today.

New York state police and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services have lodged warrants against him, Johnson said.
