ALBANY — Gov. David Paterson has issued pardons to 24 immigrants with prior criminal convictions, to prevent their deportation.

In a statement Friday, Paterson said his administration has reviewed more than 1,100 pardon applications and found that federal immigration laws are often
"excessively harsh and in need of modernization."

Paterson said the 24 people he had pardoned committed offenses in the past but had paid their debt to society
and are now making positive contributions to their communities.

In May 2010, Paterson created an Immigration Pardon Panel to collect information and help deserving individuals
avoid deportation. He said the initiative was designed to counter aspects of federal immigration laws that may result in inflexible and unjust decisions
to deport legal immigrants.

It doesn't matter what he thinks, the law is the law. He also has no jurisdication to decide federal law.

A pardon erases a criminal conviction.
If any governor pardons a legal immigrant who committed a crime in their state, and that is their only conviction, the U.S. no longer has a reason to deport them because they are no longer a convicted felon.

So why is doj not stepping up to sue him?

Me thinks that he will get a pat on the back and an "Official attaboy"

US immigration law requires deportation of every person in our country who is here illegally. There is no condition that they be a "convicted felon". The only condition is that they are in fact in our country illegally which means without our permission.

Guess you didn't get "The Policy" memo. Laws apply to citizens and "policies" are applied to Illegal Aliens.

That is the subject of the article.
Convicted felons who are given pardons by the governor, so that they are no longer convicted felons.
The article doesn't say anything about them being ILLEGAL immigrants.
People are reading more into the article than is there.

This is pertaining to LEGAL immigrants who are convicted of felonies and as a result violate their Legal Residency Status, thus rendering themselves deportable.

The ILLEGAL ones can be deported with or without a conviction.

Gov. David A. Paterson announced pardons on Monday for six immigrants facing deportation because of old criminal convictions, including a financial administrator at the City University of New York.

The governor said the pardons addressed “shortcomings in our federal immigration laws relating to deportation.â€
