White Plains man accused of faking IDs for illegal immigrants

GREENBURGH - A White Plains man is facing federal charges that he forged Social Security and resident-alien cards for illegal immigrants.

Jose Mendoza, 42, of 16 Robertson Ave., is in federal custody following his arraignment today in U.S. District Court in White Plains, Greenburgh police Sgt. Harold Young said.

Undercover officers from the Greenburgh Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the Greenburgh Street Crime Unit and the U.S. Secret Service in White Plains posed as illegal immigrants and bought the forged cards from Mendoza, Young said.

Young, the head of Greenbugh's task force, said Mendoza sold at least a dozen cards to authorities over six months.

"They're pretty good forgeries," he said.

Mendoza was arrested Tuesday at the Crossroads Plaza shopping center at 290 Tarrytown Road (Route 119), where Young said he sold most of the fake IDs.

Young said the investigation was ongoing and more arrests were possible.
